How to project your voice and not shout?

So I usually don't warm up and my voice feels alright, but this time I
did everything, breathing exercise, lip rolls, the scale in different
vowels and stuff, it lasted for about 20 mins. I was doing the
exercises from a popular guy on youtube and he kept saying that the
exercises are good for your voice all the time, so I got confident and
after the warmup started singing loudly. I don't know what I was doing
wrong. After like 20 mins of singing, my throat became dry and I
couldn't continue cause my throat was hurting. So I suppose when I
sing loud, I actually shout cause I can't keep at it even for half an
hour.

Earlier I sang in a church choir and I needed A MICROPHONE for the
third major part because I just couldn't be loud, especially in front
of people, even choir members, it sounded like a quiet falsetto.
Later, it got better and I felt like I've finally found my natural
singing voice, it was all coming out so easily and my voice could be
heard without straining.

After that, I had a death case in family so I stopped singing for
about 3 months. Now I feel like I'm at the beginning again after 2
years of singing. I'm frustrated because I can't sing any popular
song without cracking and failing at notes that aren't even that high.
Can someone help me project my voice without shouting? P.S. can't
take voice lessons, don't ask.
